Perhaps I should rethink my general policy of not buying new shoes until the soles of my previous pair start to fall off. My current pair (which I’ve worn almost every single day since I bought them around 2 years ago) is still in good shape as far as stitching goes, but the soles are missing about a centimeter in thickness from the heel and they’ve acquired an …interesting odor from me wearing them to the gym and spilling fishtank water on my feet at least once a week.

I’ve learned over my years that it’s rather silly for me to own more than one pair of sneakers at a time. I wear one pair of shoes almost exclusively, even though I own others (except for occasional forays into the world of flip flops* and [very] occasionally dress shoes). It’s not really a conscious decision; I just always reach for the same pair of favorite shoes. Knowing this, it’d simply be more efficient (and cheaper) to only buy one pair of shoes at a time.

Maybe I’ll go to a shoe store soon and look for the next One True Pair.

*I’ve had the same pair of black Reef flip flops for 4 years. Those things are really durable and comfy.

I tend to buy shoes once every two years or so. I think I’ve had the current ones for two and a half years. I need to replace them soon.

I’ve got running shoes, sandals, and dress shoes for work. I wish I had your luck with sandals. My old pair broke last summer (the strap snapped where it was attached to the sole), so I had to buy a new pair.

I agree that just having one pair of shoes and using those is more comfortable than having different pairs for different occasions and whatnot. I love to bug my friends (who are mostly female) about their shoe collections. :P My coworker, Danielle, has seven pairs of shoes in her _car_.

Living in a society of excess is … kind of excessive.

I try to have two pairs of sneakers; one for normal day things and another for “dirty and/or wet” days. I usually wait until a pair is well worn and starting to die before I put them in the second category. That way my shoes stay nice longer!

Also, I must find study flip flops because I am cruel to mine and they die easily. I will look into the Reef brand.

I wear out about 2 pairs of shoes simultaneously. Fish tanks can be hazardous to them.
