Normally, it would be a cause for concern if a slightly shady-looking man rolled down his window and yelled something at me while I biked down the road. It’d be even more worrisome if he had his driver pull into a parking lot and repeated what he’d said, since I had not understood him the first time.
In today’s case, the nice man just wanted to say “Young lady, you dropped your *mumblewindnoise*.” I discovered on my way back to retrieve this thing of mystery that both of my gloves had dropped out of my pockets while I was biking down the road. Thanks to Nice Man, I found them along the road. He saved me $5 and a trip to Wal-Mart (and painfully cold hands until I made it to the store).
I wish I hadn’t been too weirded out to smile when I thanked him. (I still hadn’t really understood what he said.)
Poor Good Samaritans… I suspect that many unexpected good deeds are met with suspicious looks instead of thanks, since odd / unexpected behavior is often perceived as dangerous in our society.

A month ago the government gave me $2,000 for being cool. If I am cool again next semester (and funds are available) I will get another $2,000.
Grants officially rock my socks.
I am interviewing for the Resident Adviser position Thursday morning. I should find out if I get the job some time in December.
After 5 semesters in Norman, I am still not used to having two Wal-Marts within city limits (in addition to many other stores). At least I’ve finally trained myself to stop using the phrase “go to town” to mean that I wish to visit a store. In the forest south of a rather small town this is a very useful phrase, since it can mean anything from “grocery shopping” to “buying more pants.” But here in Norman, what used to take half an hour to 45 minutes of driving each way (going 60mph most of the trip) now takes 15 minutes at most. Also, I do not need to say “go to town” because I am already in town.
Hearts for city life.
Finally, it is a Very Good Thing that rotting leaves do not smell like rotting potatoes. Just something to ponder if it’s Autumn in your hemisphere…
